“Inside Out” is the first of a series of exhibitions which will focus on selecting, contextualizing and displaying the practices of the youngest generation of Albanian artists, creating possibilities through the presentation of their works in the first years following their graduation.
Aurora Kalemi, Mirjana Meçaj, and Fatlum Doçi belong to a generation of artists born in the 90s that have finished their studies at the University of Arts in Tirana and painting is the medium that connects them. What creates a further common ground for their practice is their individual approach toward the medium and the way painting has become an activity which enables them to deal with individual perception of existence and reality. The starting point of their practice is their inner world. From that infinite world their ideas emerge, through the painting process comes to appear and become a way of communication with the reality. It is inside their existential and individual discourse, between Being and Appearing, that their practice emerges and it is to be understood, both in content and form.
The Albanian contemporary art scene of the last 25 years has been dominated almost exclusively from engaged art, reflecting on political, economical and social changes and at the same time many of the artists of this scene have deprived themselves from original individual consideration. These three young artists can be considered individualists, as they have consciously decided not to deal with events and their representations but with the influence and the consequences socio-political events have on the individual. Their works may not engage directly and explicitly with social, political and economical issues but engages indeed with the human being, centered in every social, political and economical process. By doing so, the process of painting gains a higher priority in their works, resulting in abstract, figurative and neo-expressionist works.
