Opening and Inauguration
MONUMENT GINGER SOCIETY TIRANA is conceived as a participatory project. Preceded by the founding of a local “Ginger Society”, the audience is invited to contribute to the building of a collective, non-hierarchical sculpture – a GINGER MONUMENT. This “ritual” is taken place on the premises of Qendra Sociale, as a counter-strategy and alternative site to the current election campaigns as they spread throughout Tirana’s public spaces.
Borrowing from Deleuze & Guattari, the ginger plant suggests a rhizomatic structure, which, if turned into a ‘monument’, brings to the fore an impossible structure.
Throughout the building process, the MONUMENT GINGER SOCIETY TIRANA aims at forging a platform for discussion on the relation of art and politics illustrated by on the day-to-day rendering of the election campaigns. In collaboration with the public, the project will result in the erection a huge sculpture in the form of a ginger plant made of wood and daily newspapers.
MONUMENT GINGER SOCIETY TIRANA has been developed by Klara Schilliger & Valerian Maly in the context of the Artist-in-Resideny Programm of the Tirana Art Lab – Centre for Contemporary Art, during April and May 2011 in Tirana. Klara Schilliger & Valerian Maly are performance artists that live, work and perform together as a couple.
